Two-factor authentication, commonly known as 2FA, is an extra layer of security that goes beyond a single password. It can also be known as multi-factor authentication.
In addition to the username and password, a user also has to provide a piece of information, only accessible to them - often called a security token. By requiring this additional element, it protects your account from easily being breached. If someone gets your password, 2FA is an extra layer of security as the attacker needs your mobile phone to access the verification code. This makes it harder for unauthorized people to use your account or access your personal data.
You can learn more about 2FA in this blog post, written by Wagepoint’s own fraud team.
How to set up two-factor authentication
Wagepoint uses the Google Authenticator smartphone application to generate your security token. Before following the steps outlined below, please download the Google Authenticator application from your preferred app store on your mobile phone. For more information, please read the help file from Google.
Important Note: These steps need a desktop or laptop computer to complete.
- Navigate to the “My Info” tab in your Employee Portal.
- Click "Enable two-factor authentication." You will be prompted to enter your current password for security reasons.
- Follow the steps in the setup wizard, based on your operating system. Click "Continue with iOS" or "Continue with Android". You will be asked to scan a QR code on the screen using your phone. A verification code will display on your device. Please enter this code under, "Enter your code" on your computer screen.
Note: In order for the verification process to work, the "Date & Time" settings on your smartphone and computer must match, displaying the same time. If your phone and computer are displaying different times, navigate the Date & Time settings on your devices and select the option that allows you to "use the date and time provided by your network" or use "automatic" date and time settings.
Note: Please print the set of Recovery Codes i.e. one-off codes, that can be used in case you can not access your phone. - Two-factor authentication is now enabled for your account.
- Each time you sign into Wagepoint, you will be prompted to enter a 6-digit authentication code that you can find in the Google Authenticator app on your smartphone.
Disable Two-Factor Authentication
- Navigate to the “My Info” tab in your Employee Portal.
- Click "Disable two-factor authentication." You will be prompted to enter your current password for security reasons.
- Follow the steps in the setup wizard to disable two-factor authentication for your account.
Unable to access authentication code
- Click "I need help with an authentication code" on the authentication page if you lose your phone or cannot access your authentication code for any other reason.
- Enter the 16-digit recovery code. Note: each code can only be used once.
